If you’re someone who reads labels, you’ve probably seen both “fragrance-free” and “unscented” on personal care products.
They sound like they should mean the same thing.
They don’t.
What does “unscented” actually mean?
Generally, unscented means the finished product doesn’t have a noticeable scent. But that doesn’t necessarily mean fragrance ingredients weren’t used.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, some products labeled “unscented” may contain fragrance ingredients added specifically to mask the natural smell of the other ingredients. In other words, fragrance can sometimes be used to make something smell like… nothing.
That surprised us, too.
So what does “fragrance-free” mean?
Fragrance-free means fragrance ingredients haven’t been added to the product.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency makes an even clearer distinction through its Safer Choice program: fragrance-free products contain neither fragrance materials nor masking scents.
That doesn’t necessarily mean a fragrance-free product has absolutely no smell.
Ingredients have their own natural aromas. Oils, tallow, cacao, raw shea butter, honey, and other ingredients can contribute a subtle natural scent without any fragrance being added to the formula.
That’s an important distinction:
Fragrance-free doesn’t always mean scent-free.
Why does the difference matter?
For some people, avoiding fragrance is simply a personal preference. For others, fragrance can be a skin concern.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends looking for products labeled fragrance-free rather than unscented, particularly when choosing products for dry or sensitive skin.
And this is exactly why reading the label matters.
A product can say “unscented” on the front and still contain fragrance ingredients. Flip it over. Read what’s actually in it.
Why Del Toro Ranch is fragrance-free
We don't add fragrance to our soap.
No fragrance oils. No essential oils added for scent. No masking fragrance added to cover up the natural aroma of our ingredients.
We simply don't think soap needs to smell like a tropical vacation, a vanilla cupcake, or a Christmas tree to do its job.
We’d rather keep it simple.
Our handmade fragrance-free soap is made in small batches with thoughtfully chosen ingredients we’re happy to use on our own family.
Because sometimes what isn’t in the bar matters just as much as what is.
Real ingredients. Clean. Simple.
The quick takeaway
Unscented: Designed not to have a noticeable scent, but may still contain fragrance ingredients used to mask other odors.
Fragrance-free: No fragrance ingredients are added — although the ingredients themselves may still have a natural aroma.
Next time you see “unscented” on a label, turn it over and take a look.
Go ahead. Read the label.
